Energy Champions offer free visits

There are three active Lyme Area Energy Champions based in Lyme Regis, Uplyme and Charmouth with additional active support and engagement from our Dorset Council ward member Belinda Bawden. From 30 November 2024 until 31 March 2025 they will again be offering free thermal energy surveys to residents. The Charmouth energy champion plans to join a session at the Bank House Café in Charmouth on Saturday 14 December from 10.00-12.00 to discuss environmental issues where all local residents will be welcome. If you’d like to book a visit from an Energy Champion please email energychampslyme@gmail.com.

The Great Seed Robbery

UPOV91 (The International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants convention) is a little known seed law that is added into British and other countries’ trade agreements covering plant breeding, seeds and propagation. The UPOV Convention concerns seed patenting, farmers’ rights, ecological diversity, food poverty and biopiracy.  

Our Seeds, Soil and Food Security lead, Suzy Gallina, thinks UPOV should be dismantled and has written to West Dorset MP, Edward Morello, asking for his opinion. See the letter here.  You can watch a short video by Grain if you click on the image above.

SEED SAVERS GET BACK TO WORK

Our Annual Seed Swap is coming up - Saturday 1st March is the date for your diaries. In preparation, Suzy Gallina is gathering her team to strip seeds, sort them, put them into packets and label them for the big day of the swap.
Meetings are held on Tuesday afternoons 2-4pm . Would you like to join in with these very enjoyable sessions where tea and cake is always provided? New team members are being recruited.

Repair Cafe volunteers needed

The new Lyme Regis repair cafe should be up and running in the new year at the Boat Building Academy. But they need volunteers. If you can repair things (eg electrical appliances, computers, toys, clothes etc) they would love to hear from you. They are also looking for people to help organise. ‘IT’S NOT EASY TO BE GREEN’
TLG talk

CATHERINE CAUSLEY,  the lead Climate Change Officer of East Devon District Council, gave a stimulating TLG talk in October.  While we want to do the best we can to tackle climate change, it is often hard to see what we do in our every day life can really make a difference.  Catherine outlined many tips and small steps we can all take to help us reach carbon free targets in our communities and in the world.  Included was information about the ‘Green Peace guide to life’ and WWF’s footprint calculator and tips on energy saving at home. and recycling. TALK & DEMONSTRATION ‘The Answer Lies in the Soil’

Uplyme and Lyme Regis Horticultural Society are hosting a talk by David Usher who will give a practical demonstration exploring what soil is, and how to look after it to get the best results. Handout with useful soil-related information provided.

FESTIVE LITTER PICK
Saturday November 30th 10.00am - 12 noon - RNLI Station @ The Cobb

The Lyme Litterpickers, part of Turn Lyme Green, remain hard at work tackling rubbish and clearing up plastic pollution. Meet at the RNLI shop at the Cobb. Bring a bucket if you can. Gloves and litter pickers provided. Delicious home-made mince pies will also be provided! Santa hats optional.

MAKING RIVERS BETTER

A celebration of all that has been achieved in 2024 to make local rivers better. Speakers from the River Axe Landscape Recovery, the River Lim Action Group, the River Sid Catchment Group, and Seaton Wetlands. Register here. You can also just turn up on the night.
