Air Bee’n’Bee

River Lim Action is helping Bee Friendly Lyme Regis, both TLG projects, to install handmade “Bee Hotels” around the wider River Lim catchment. So far three hotels have been placed near the River Lim, with another three going in this autumn.

They’ve also been put up in the churchyard at Uplyme. Here’s church warden, Jan Impey, and Stephen Gray, a Bee Friendly team member, with one. Uplyme’s Parochial Church Council has welcomed the chance to support pollinators and wildlife in their churchyard. The Bee Friendly team is approaching the Town Council, other local churches and organisations to find suitable locations for the hotels designed to attract solitary bees, which are highly skilled pollinators. Plans are being made to monitor each hotel. It would be great if we could find people to join the Bee Friendly team to see how each installation is getting on with attracting bees. Build a Bee Hotel

We are pleased to announce a collaboration between Turn Lyme Green’s Bee Friendly Lyme Regis project and the Lyme Regis Boat Building Academy. The BBA is adding a new course to their program. Participants can choose between two November dates for a hands-on workshop where they will build and take home their own cedar wood bee hotel.

Polly Benfield, from Turn Lyme Green, said: “We are very pleased to collaborate with the BBA on this community project. Bee Friendly Lyme Regis wants to get as many bee hotels into local gardens as possible, creating a corridor of habitats to support our solitary bees.” Dates: Wednesday 4th and Thursday 12th November. Seed Savers at Melplash Show

Dorset Seed Savers is a new TLG joint venture to encourage seed sowing, growing and sharing. This project will be in association with, and help to support, Bridport Seed Library, Seed Saturday Lyme – the annual Lyme Regis seed swap - and Bee Friendly Lyme Regis. Suzy Gallina and Steve Meek launched the project at the Melplash Show in Bridport, attracting dozens of visitors and taking enough bookings to fill the first workshop (more to follow). Participants are trained in how to save seed; undertake to grow, and save the seed of one edible plant; get together to celebrate and share their seed. If successful the model can be rolled out across Dorset. Suzy Gallina says: “Our fantastic display at the Melplash Show was aiming to attract attention! People easily see and relate to food. On the other hand, seed is tiny and has become almost invisible. Despite this, both are absolutely elemental to our existence”. If one of your resolutions is to learn a new skill, connect more with nature or become more engaged in the community, then seed saving and sharing might just be the thing to tick your boxes.

Uplyme & Lyme Regis Horticultural Society. Ellen Rignell of Winnow Farm Seeds near Bridport is giving a talk on seed saving. Ellen’s aim is to bring colourful, flavourful and genetically diverse varieties of seed to your garden.

Saturday October 10th
SEED SAVING WORKSHOP 10.30am-12.30pm
Driftwood Cafe, Baptist Church, Lyme Regis DT7 3NY
There will be hot drinks and carrot cake, and some seeds to take home. Workshop places are free, but numbers are limited to 20 –– please book your place at dorsetseedsavers@gmail.com

We will be giving an overview of the year with dates of subsequent meetings, the choosing of veg varieties and distribution of seeds. We also hope to let you know about our expert speakers and further proposed workshops.
All are welcome.

Greener Open Homes this October

Now’s the time to sort out your energy inefficient house and install a heat pump, solar panels or a battery. And we all want to keep bills as low as possible. For impartial advice on what works and how to do it, visit a home and talk to someone who has improved their home. Dorset Greener Homes, organised by Dorset Climate Action Network, will open on two weekends in October, and some of them are open all year by appointment. There are four open in Lyme Regis and one in Charmouth. You will need to book. Visit www.dorsetgreenerhomes.org for details of homes.

Litter Pick Volunteer Organiser Needed

We can’t advertise the date of our next litter pick yet as we are still looking for someone to help organise and welcome people. Janet and Caroline are happy to chat about it and it’s not a big commitment if we can find a couple of people who can be there 2 or 3 times a year with the current organisers on a rota basis. BOOMERANG THANKS… The Boomerang Bag team raised a cheer to thank Liz and Hilton Davis for hosting our sewing sessions. They are moving on… but thankfully not far. Liz will still be sewing and keeping in touch with all the local businesses who love our bags. We will miss their warmth and hospitality and our gatherings around their table. Susie Butter is kindly hosting our weekly sessions so the sewing machines will keep humming as we add new bags to the over 3,000 we have sewn in the past 4 years.
