From Boomerang Bags to Bees - TLG in action this autumn

WELCOME TO THE TLG AUTUMN UPDATE

TLG is proud to announce that it’s the joint winner of The Reconnoitre Energies Green/Eco Business Award. We’re delighted to share first place with Clare Matheson of Little Green Change. TLG Chair Rob Smith received the award at the Lyme Business Awards celebration. Our thanks to those who nominated us.

Coming up, we’ve got bees as the topic for our November talk. There is also a range of activities to support and help with: sewing; seed packing; litter picking. And the 20 mph speed limit consultation has just come out. More about all of that below. We’re also planning our events programme for next year. What would you like from us? 20 mph - HAVE YOUR SAY

Dorset Council has opened a public consultation on a 20mph speed limit for Lyme Regis. TLG has been supporting this as it’s safer for pedestrians, calms traffic and reduces noise and air pollution. You can find more information and a map of the roads that will be covered on our website.
DEADLINE: November 7.

SEW SUCCESSFUL

TLG’s Boomerang Bag scheme is a huge success locally, supported by many businesses and shoppers. TLG litter pick organiser, Janet Breeze on her holiday in Tasmania nearly 11,000 miles away, was excited to find the same initiative alive and well there (see her holiday snap left). Of course it’s to be expected as Boomerang Bags started in Australia. Lyme is one of 1,000 communities worldwide tackling plastic pollution as part of this global network.

The Recycle Sewing Group is not only making Boomerang Bags. To keep out the winter chill and save energy, the group is also now making a limited number of draught excluders. If you would like a draught excluder or know someone who would like one, please contact enquiries@turnlymegreen.co.uk

Suzy Gallina writes: We’ve been busy harvesting the last seeds before it’s too wet. We have donations of seed already and a good, diverse contribution again from the charity, Cultivating Change. Now it’s time to pack them - and I’d like to invite newcomers to join us at our packing sessions. Just email for more details.

We’re a small group – usually about four or five join me here at home in Lyme for a couple of hours on a Tuesday afternoon, once a month. Each gathering runs from 2pm to 4pm, with tea and home-baked cake. The dates are:

28 Oct, 18 Nov, 9 Dec, 13 January, 10 Feb, 3 March

SEEDSATURDAY LYME is on 7 March from 11.30 to 1pm at the Pine Hall, Baptist Church, Lyme Regis (top of Broad Street)

LYME REGIS BEACH CLEANS

The next litter pick is on Saturday November 29, 9.30am - 11.30am. We can provide litter pickers, gloves and bags/buckets but if you can bring your own, all the better. We dispose of the rubbish. Home made mince pies for participants! For more information, contact litterpicklyme@gmail.com

THE DORSET BEE - talk 7pm November 18

Things are pretty tough out there for pollinators but we can do something to help. Learn how to make Lyme more bee friendly year round at a talk by Bee Friendly Bridport. Helen Bolter-Griffin is buzzing along to meet TLG folk at 7pm on Tuesday November 18 at the Driftwood Cafe. She’s also talking about Bees for Well Being and her community interest company, Nature Buzz.

Trill Farm Garden has a new pick up point for its local, organic veg in Lyme Regis. Fresh salads, veg and herbs are available every Friday with a reduced delivery cost if you pick up from the hub in Colway Lane. You can view the options on their website.

DONATE TO WOODROFFE SCHOOL’S BOTANICAL GARDEN: Woodroffe School plans to transform its outdoor areas into beautiful botanical gardens with trees, a pond, vegetable beds, and more! This will boost biodiversity, student wellbeing, and learning opportunities. Local businesses are donating their expertise, time and materials. Funds are needed to buy the plants needed. PLANS FOR DORSET The consultation on the draft Local Plan for Dorset has been extended to October 31. TLG has commented to support more affordable homes, but expressed concerns about the environmental impacts of some of the sites identified for development. Have your say - your views are important.
